A step-by-step roadmap for Austrian students and professionals wishing to participate in the J-1 Intern or Trainee program.

J-1 Visa Program

Austrian citizens can apply for the J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa to work in the USA as an Intern (for students or recent grads) or a Trainee (for professionals with 1-5 years exp). You must be sponsored by a designated US organization (Sponsor) during your stay.

Visa Categories

J-1 Intern

For currently enrolled post-secondary students or those who graduated within 12 months. Max duration 12 months.

J-1 Trainee

For professionals with a degree and 1 year work exp, or 5 years exp if no degree. Max duration 18 months.

Summer Work Travel

Seasonal work program for students during their summer holidays. Limited to 4 months.

Requirements

Valid Austrian Passport

DS-2019 Form (from US Sponsor)

English Language Proficiency (B2 or better)

Proof of Funds for initial stay

Health Insurance meeting US Govt standards

Application Process

Find a US Sponsor

Contact a US-designated sponsor organization (e.g., CIEE, InterExchange) to get approved for the program.

Receive DS-2019

The sponsor issues the DS-2019 form after reviewing your internship/traineeship offer (DS-7002 Training Plan).

Pay SEVIS Fee

Pay the I-901 SEVIS fee online and complete the DS-160 visa application form.

Embassy Interview

Schedule and attend an interview at the US Embassy in Vienna. Visa approval is usually determined on the spot.

Service Note

The Consular Section handles all non-immigrant visa (J-1) queries. Appointments are required for all visa applicants. Ensure you bring your DS-2019 to the interview.
