Work & Residency Pathways for German Citizens
Information based on current research for German citizens wishing to live and work in the People's Republic of China.
German citizens currently enjoy visa-free entry for up to 15 days for tourism, business, and family visits. However, for employment purposes, a valid Work (Z) Visa is still required before entry.
German citizens primarily apply for the Z Visa (Work), the M Visa (Business), or the R Visa (Talent). Long-term employment transitions from a Z Visa to a residence permit.
The primary visa for employment. Requires a Work Permit notification and the conversion into a residence permit locally within 30 days.
For top-tier foreign professionals and experts. Offers multi-entry valid for 5-10 years and stays of up to 180 days per entry.
The Chinese employer applies for the work permit notification through the local bureau of foreign experts.
Submit your Z-Visa application at the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre (CVASC) in Berlin, Hamburg, or Munich.
Register with the local police within 24 hours of arrival in Mainland China.
Complete the medical check and apply for your residence permit at the Exit-Entry Bureau within 30 days.
