Available Visa Types for Hong Kong Residents

Hong Kong residents have access to several priority routes, including a Special Open Work Permit for recent graduates, the International Experience Canada (IEC) program, and the Express Entry system. Canada currently offers robust support for talent migration from Hong Kong.

Main Work Routes

Special Open Work Permit

For HK residents who graduated from a post-secondary institution in the last 10 years. An open work permit valid for up to 3 years. No job offer required.

IEC (Working Holiday)

Allows HK youth (18-30) to work and travel for up to 1 year. Requires an HKSAR or BNO passport. Quota-based selection from a pool.

Express Entry

The federal points-based system for skilled permanant migration. Ideal for seasoned professionals and high-level managers.

General Requirements

Valid HKSAR or BNO Passport
Proof of graduation (within 10 years for Special Permit)
Language skills (IELTS/CELPIP/TEF/TCF) for Express Entry
No criminal record (HK Police Character Certificate)
Financial proof (bank statements for initial entry)

Typical Process

Create an IRCC Account

Sign up on the IRCC secure portal (GCKey) and complete the eligibility survey.

Submit Online Application

Upload required documents, including your degree certificates and character check references.

3
Biometrics Collection

Receive a biometric instruction letter and book an appointment at the VAC in North Point, HK.

4
Final Approval

Upon approval, receive your study/work permit letter (POE Introdution) or eTA for travel to Canada.

Service Note

The Canadian mission in Quarry Bay is exceptionally busy. Most work permit applications are now completely digitized, but biometric collection at the authorized VAC is still mandatory for all new applicants.
