Work & Residency Pathways for Taiwan Residents
Information based on current research for Taiwan residents wishing to live and work in the Mainland.
Taiwan residents primarily use the Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents (MTP) to enter, live, and work in the Mainland. Since 2018, the requirement for a specific "Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Citizens' Work Permit" has been abolished, meaning Taiwan residents can be employed directly using their MTP.
For Taiwan residents living/working in the Mainland for >6 months. Enables access to social security, education, and various 18-category citizen services.
Taiwan residents can be legally employed by any Mainland entity using only their valid MTP. No separate work visa or permit is required.
Taiwan residents are encouraged to establish individual businesses (?????) in many provinces with simplified registration processes.
Taiwan residents enter via checkpoints using their 5-year multi-entry MTP card. No visa application needed.
Sign a contract with a Mainland employer. The employer updates their internal HR records with your MTP details.
Register for social security and housing funds at the local human resources bureau using your MTP.
If staying for >6 months, apply for the Residence Permit for HK, Macao, and Taiwan Residents at the local PSB.

Taiwan residents who do not yet have an MTP card can apply for a single-entry MTP at authorized port-of-entry offices in Mainland China upon arrival.
