Relocating to Austria

Information based on current research for US citizens wishing to live and work in the Republic of Austria.

Working Holiday Agreement (Launched Feb 2024)

A new agreement between the US and Austria allows citizens aged 18-30 to live and work in the partner country for 12 months. US citizens must have graduated within the last 12 months or be current students.

Main Work Routes

Red-White-Red Card

The primary route for skilled workers. Points-based system considering age, education, and experience. Requires a binding job offer with a compliant salary.

Working Holiday

Launched in 2024. For US citizens aged 18-30. Allows a 12-month stay with full work rights. Requires a degree or enrollment in a post-secondary program.

EU Blue Card

For highly qualified professionals with a degree and reaching a higher salary threshold. Offers simplified mobility within the EU.

General Requirements

Valid US Passport (with at least 10 years validity remaining)
Job Offer / Employer Declaration (Arbeitgebererklärung)
Authenticated University Degree or Vocation Cert
Proof of Address (Lease or Booking in Austria)
Qualified Private/Travel or Public Health Insurance

Typical Process

Enter Visa-Free

Travel to Austria as a tourist. You have 90 days to register your residence (Meldezettel) and submit your application.

In-Country Submission

Apply directly at the Residence Authority (Magistrat or Bezirkshauptmannschaft) in your district of residence.

Labour Market Check

The Austrian Labour Market Service (AMS) will evaluate your application against their local labor shortage needs and your points.

Permit Collection

Once approved, you will be issued a plastic residence permit card. You must use this card for all future entries/exits.

Service Note

While you can apply from within Austria, processing times can vary significantly (8-12 weeks). It is recommended to have sufficient funds to cover your stay during the processing period, as you cannot technically start working until the card is issued.
