Work & Residency Pathways for US Citizens
Information based on current research for US citizens wishing to live and work in the People's Republic of China.
To work legally in Mainland China, US citizens must first obtain a Z Visa (Work Visa). Upon arrival, this is converted into a Foreigner's Residence Permit. Highly specialized professionals (Category A) may also apply for the R Visa (Talent Visa).
The primary route for overseas employees. Requires a Foreigner's Work Permit Notification. Issued for 30 days and converted to a residence permit in China.
For high-level experts (e.g., world-renowned scientists, top business executives). Allows for 10-year multi-entry and simplified family processing.
For business visits and short-term assignments. Does not allow for actual direct employment or receiving salary from a Chinese entity.
Your Chinese employer applies for your Work Permit Notification online. You must provide authenticated diplomas and a background check.
Apply for the Z visa at a Chinese Embassy or Consulate in the US (DC, NYC, SF, etc.) using the notification letter.
Within 24 hours of arrival, register with the local PSB (Police). Complete a health check at the local entry-exit inspection center.
Within 30 days, your employer applies to convert your Z visa into a residence permit at the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau.

The 'authentication' of US documents is a complex multi-step process involving the Secretary of State and the Chinese Embassy. It is highly recommended to use a visa agent for the document authentication phase to avoid delays.
