Work & Residency Pathways for US Citizens

Relocating to the UK

Information based on current research for US citizens wishing to live and work in the United Kingdom.

Available Visa Types for US Citizens

US citizens can apply for the High Potential Individual (HPI) Visa, Skilled Worker Visa, or Global Talent Visa. The HPI visa is a unique 2-year open work permit for graduates of top global universities (including many US schools).

Main Work Routes

HPI Visa

High Potential Individual. For graduates of top 50 global universities. 2-year open work permit. No job offer required.

Skilled Worker

The primary route. Requires a job offer from a UK licensed sponsor and meeting the salary threshold.

Global Talent

For leaders in academia, arts, or tech. Fast-track to residency. Requires endorsement from a recognized body.

General Requirements

Valid US Passport (with biometric chip)
Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) reference number (for Skilled Worker)
English language proof (US citizens are exempt)
Personal savings (unless employer certifies maintenance)
Payment of Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)

Typical Process

1
Obtain CoS

Your UK employer must issue you a Certificate of Sponsorship. Ensure the role meets the UK SOC code and salary requirements.

2
Online Application

Apply via the UK Gov website. Use the 'UK Immigration: ID Check' app to scan your biometric passport (no need for a VFS visit).

3
Pay IHS & Application Fee

Pay the health surcharge (approx. £1,035 per year) and the visa fee. This must be done during the online application.

4
Decision & Digitial Status

Decisions are usually made in 3 weeks. US citizens receive a digital status (eVisa) and no longer require a physical BRP card.

UK Home Office (UKVI)

Service Note

US citizens are 'non-visa nationals', meaning they can apply entirely via the mobile app without submitting their physical passport if they have a biometric chip. This significantly speeds up the process.
