Work & Residency Pathways for British Citizens
Information based on current research for British citizens wishing to live and work in the United States.
British citizens primarily utilize the H-1B Specialty Occupation Visa, the L-1 Intra-company Transferee Visa, and the O-1 Extraordinary Ability Visa. While ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) covers short-term business visits, all formal employment requires a specific visa status.
For professionals with a bachelor's degree. Subject to an annual lottery. Requires a US employer sponsor. Valid for up to 6 years.
For employees of UK companies being transferred to a US branch or subsidiary. Streamlined for managers (L-1A) and specialized staff (L-1B).
For individuals with extraordinary ability in their field. Common for British talent in creative industries, tech, and healthcare.
Your US employer sponsor files the I-129 petition with USCIS in the United States. Wait for the I-797 approval notice.
Fill out the DS-160. Create a profile on the official US visa services site for the UK to pay the fee and book your interview.
Attend an interview at the US Embassy in London (Nine Elms). Bring your passport, I-797, and job support letter.
Once approved, your passport will be returned via the DX courier service within a few working days. You are then free to travel.
